About Epic Higher Ed

"Knowledge exists only when it is given." - David Mitchell

"With great power comes great responsibility" - Uncle Ben

As educators we have the unique opportunity to impact the lives of our students on a day to day basis. Despite the relatively small amount of time you spend with your students your impact is profound. I believe that in higher education we can serve our students better than we are. You don't have to make make monumental shifts and changes to have a monumental impact. The small actions you take day in and day out are what makes Higher Ed Epic; and I am here to support you in that.

Believe it or not, my name's not Ed.

My name is Dustin Bakkie. I am a husband to my wife Caylan, a father of a rambunctious little boy named Boone, a frisbee-thrower to my dog Bayliss, a Pokemon Master, a lover of the outdoors, and an Educator.

I teach at California State University, Chico in the Kinesiology Department. My academic background is in Kinesiology and Biomechanics, but my passion as an educator lies in quality teaching and learning in higher education. When I dive down the internet rabbit hole or am up at night with ideas running wild in my head its focused on how I can be a better educator and better serve my students.

The quote at the top of the page is one of my favorite quotes as an educator. In fact it's one of the reasons I started this Epic Higher Ed pursuit. I want to share what I have learned and what I am learning with you, so that together we can improve teaching and learning in higher education.
